A tool, not a solution

The Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) is not a silver bullet and is far from perfect. But like any tool, says Chris Brennan from Moxi - Farm Forest Services, if you understand what it can and cannot do, you can use it safely. Most farmers have heard enough about carbon credits to be wary of them. And fair enough. When carbon becomes the main driver of land use, whole farms can be seen planted into pine and decisions that do not reflect good farming practice. The question is: “Can carbon credits actually improve the farming system, rather than replacing it?” Chris’ short answer: Yes, if used carefully, and aligned with good land management.

Waiōtahe/Nukuhou Water Care is bringing in Chris Brennan from Tauranga to walk through a carbon planning exercise for the Osborne farm. This session focuses on how to identify existing opportunities on-farm, what actually qualifies, where carbon credits work (and don’t), and what the numbers look like in practice. Chris will step through a real plan designed for the host farm, and explain the “carbon bank” concept – using carbon income to fund future planting, stabilise erosion-prone land, and protect waterways over time.
