Enjoy > In and on the water

Get in or on the water by swimming, paddle boarding, boating, diving, wind and kite surfing, water and jet skiing. Most of these activities have been allocated a certain area so it’s safe for all to do what they love. There are areas within the harbour where some activities are restricted to protect native wildlife and oyster farming.

Swimming

Head to the Ōhope boat ramp swimming area (opposite the Ōhope Golf Course). Swimmers share this area with personal watercraft users and fishers. It is safest for young children at high tide, when there is little or no tidal current. The Port Ōhope wharf is popular for diving and bombing. Avoid the harbour mouth.

Kayaking & SUP-ing

This is another magic way to explore the harbour. Launch your own kayak or SUP. Alternatively, contact one of the operators below. Check the tides before you go. The calm water inside the Ōhiwa spit is shallow and a great safe place for children to try kayaking. Bring your own or get in touch with these two providers:

Boating, water & jet skiing

There are three boat ramps, one next to Port Ōhope wharf, one at the Ōhope boatramp (opposite the golf course) and one over on the eastern side on Ōhiwa Loop Road. The harbour is very safe for boating of all kinds, just be aware that much of it can be very shallow and the bar at the harbour mouth is constantly changing and can be dangerous and should be used with caution. Check out the rules for navigation on the local signage or download the ‘Boating in the Bay' booklet.
